Burn Notification

Published on Author Office_Admin

To get a Burn Notification Number, call your local Wildfire Management Forest Protection Area Office {306-953-3422} between April 1 and October 31 during business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (An online option will be available for the 2016 wildfire season.) When you call, be ready to provide the following information: name or organization responsible, contact number(s), mailing address, email address (if applicable), burn location(s), and purpose of the burn.

Do I Need a Notification Number?

From April 1 to October 31, a Burn Notification Number is required for open fires in a provincial forest, in park land, or any quarter section wholly or partly within 4.5 km of a provincial forest. Information about the new regulations, including notification exemptions for small fires, is outlined in the Open Burning Synopsis. Information on safe burning practices is also available in Best Practices for Open Burning. If your fire is less than 1 metre in diameter such as a fire pit, a smudge or a burning barrel a Burn Notification Number will not be required.  If you’re burning within a rural municipality, remember all municipal bylaws and policies will apply to you as well.

When do Burn Notification Numbers Expire?

Burn Notification Numbers expire at the end of the day following the day of issue. For brush piles only (defined in regulation as not less than two metres in height and three metres in diameter), the Burn Notification Number will expire at the end of the fourth day after the day of issue. All fires must be extinguished on the expiry date and time.

After you obtain your Burn Notification Number, we recommend calling the controlled burn notification number 306-922-3473, to let them know of your burn plan. This will help avoid unnecessary dispatches of firefighting resources to controlled fires.

Remember: It’s Your Fire

Whether you require a Burn Notification Number or not, any person who starts an open fire that spreads or is likely to spread is liable for all costs incurred by the ministry in the suppression or control of the fire. A person is fully responsible for the burn.
